The idea for this song came about with the beginning of Lent.
I got to thinking about the practice of not saying ALLELUIA during worship, which is followed by some congregations during the Lenten season. It struck me that with all the people not saying ALLELUIA, it must be the rocks turn to cry out. As I wrote the lyrics it struck me that whether I say Alleluia or not, God is perfectly capable of bringing about the praise for which He is worthy, even from a pile or rocks. I praise God that He gives me the opportunity to be a part of A Little Rock Concert.
I heard the stones cry out they were singing "Alleluia"
Across the river they were singing "Praise the Lord"
I heard the stones cry out, they heard we were on hiatus
So they picked up the song as Jesus said before
I heard a pebble and a pebble and a pebble and a pebble
Singing four part harmony
I heard great big boulder singing bass
With a pecan tree
I heard a diamond doing a beat box
A soprano-singing shell
The silt was playing tambourine
As best my ears could tell
I heard a skipper and his brothers singing, they were kind of flat
But no one seemed to care
I heard hailstone playing
Claves falling through the air
Everywhere my ears turned
They heard the rockin' song
My heart could hardly wait to
Open up and sing along.
